GEO for Founders: How to Get Your Startup Cited in AI Search

By GeoIQ team June 2026 7 min read
The Founder's Problem

Your potential customers are asking ChatGPT and Perplexity "what is the best tool for [your category]." If your startup is not in the answer, you do not exist to that buyer. This is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) - and most founders have not started on it yet.

Why Founders Need to Care About AI Visibility Now

B2B buying behavior has changed faster than most founders realize. A founder looking for an analytics tool no longer just googles it - they ask ChatGPT, they search on Perplexity, they check what Gemini recommends. These AI-assisted searches are increasingly where the consideration phase happens.

The brands that appear in those AI answers are getting inbound interest from buyers who are already convinced they need the category. The brands that do not appear miss that intent entirely.

Unlike Google SEO, which takes 6 to 12 months to see results, AI visibility can improve meaningfully in 4 to 8 weeks with the right approach. And right now, most of your competitors have not started.

The Four Levers Founders Can Control

1. Entity clarity

AI models build their understanding of your startup by aggregating data from multiple sources. Your website, LinkedIn company page, Crunchbase profile, Product Hunt listing, and press mentions should all describe your company the same way - same name, same one-sentence description, same target audience.

Inconsistency across sources is the single most common reason AI models misrepresent or skip a startup in their answers.

2. Answer-first content

AI models extract answers from content. If your homepage and key pages bury the main point after three paragraphs of backstory, the model skips you and cites a competitor whose content answers the question in the first line.

Rewrite your homepage, your "what we do" page, and your category pages to lead with a direct, one-sentence answer to the question "what does this product do and who is it for."

3. Third-party mentions

AI models trust brand mentions from independent sources more than content on your own website. Getting listed on G2, appearing in a Tech in Asia article, or being mentioned in a relevant Hacker News discussion each add to the citation pool AI models draw from.

Prioritize getting mentioned by others over publishing more content yourself.

4. Technical signals

Add an llms.txt file to your domain root. Make sure your robots.txt does not block AI crawlers. Add Organization schema markup to your homepage. These are one-time technical fixes that take under two hours total.
